California 2018
« on: April 29, 2018, 04:47:26 PM »
time for another pre trip report for my June 2018 trip to California

Itinerary
Sunday June 17

Fly Europe to San Francisco
Supershuttle from airport
Check into hotel in Fishermans Wharf area

Monday June 18
Walk to Pier 33 for Alcatraz Tour. I have pre booked a ticket
The tour includes ferry to and from the island. I plan to spend about 3 hours on the island
After I get back to land, I will then walk up to Pier 39 for shopping and a meal

Tuesday June 19
Supershuttle from my hotel to the airport
One way flight with Southwest to LAX
Supershuttle from LAX to Motel 6 Maingate in Anaheim
I will buy the local ART shuttle bus multiple day ticket at my hotel. The ART Shuttle bus is how I will to and from Disneyland, approx 10 minutes journey

Wednesday June 20
Disneyland Main Park
I buy my park tickets in advance on Last Minute Travel Club. Using LMTC I save about $30 compared to buying tickets direct from the Disney website. I used LMTC for previous trips. You get an email confirmation with a bar-code. You then print out or show this on your phone to the CM at the entrance turnstile. They will scan the bar-code and print out the actual proper park ticket. Easy and fast and no hassle.

I have booked the Fantasmic Dining Package at Blue Bayou Restaurant (restaurant in Pirates) Fantasmic is a night time water show on The Rivers of America. It is a mix of live characters and animations projected onto fountain screens.

Thursday June 21
California Adventures Park
This is the second park in Disneyland. I have booked lunch at Storytellers Restaurant which is in The Grand California Hotel. The Grand California Hotel is similar to Sequoia Lodge in DLP.

Friday June 22
Disneyland Main Park

Saturday June 23
Transfer from Anaheim to Hollywood by bus, approx travel time 3 hours
Check into an AirBnB just off Hollywood Boulevard

Sunday June 24 to Friday June 29
I havent got a day by day plan but things I want to do
Hollywood Boulevard
Shopping
Santa Monica
Hang out with friends
Paramount Studios Tour
Universal City Walk

Saturday June 30
Get Flyaway Bus from Union Station to LAX airport
Fly LAX to Europe

Looks like a nice trip  :)
I've just arrived back home from San Francisco and Disneyland. Have you been to San Francisco before?

Its something that has always fascinated me, this island in the middle of the bay. I saw it last time in the distance from the Golden Gate Bridge and knew I would be back some day to do the tour. The tickets go on sale 90 days in advance and book out fast, especially in the summer months.

I was there last week, and for me about 3,5 days was enough.
But I didn't ride every ride, so I would say it also depends on how much you want to ride.

I have done 1 and 2 day visits, this year for the first time I am doing a 3 day visit. Disneyland California is a like a bigger, more intense version of DLP, so I would say for a first timer, 3 or 4 days would be perfect.

I have written a few trip reports over the years
2015 http://www.magicforum.eu/index.php?topic=19297.0
2014 http://www.magicforum.eu/index.php?topic=17335.0

The main advice I would give to a first timer

1. Stay offsite at any of the motels on Harbour Boulvard
2. Get Park Hoppers
3. Book dining packages for either World of Colour or Fantasmic or both
4. Dont book dining packages for parades
5. Research Maxpass, it may or may not be of value to you
6. Dont book tickets through the official Disney website, research Last Minute Travel Club
7. There is no need to rent a car if you are just going to Disney BUT if you want to go to other places, rent a car. Check out Google maps. Disneyland is located in Anaheim, which is approx 1 hour travel on motorways south of LAX airport. Hollywood is approx 90 minutes north of Disneyland. Universal Studios is approx 90 minutes travel north of Disneyland. There is very limited and convoluted public transport between Disneyland and Universal Studios. Most people rent a car if they want to go to the other theme parks, Universal, Six Flags or Knotts Berry.  The only other way I would recommend is to take the Starline bus from Disney to Universal. The downside of this is that you get there after park opening and leave before Park closing.

Update
I have now bought my park tickets  3 days, 1 park per day. I decided against park hoppers as when I had them before I didnt really park hop that much.

I bought the tickets online through Last Minute Travel Club. It cost me $258 compared to $280 through Disney. I was sent a confirmation email with a PDF E Ticket with a barcode. I just show this E Ticket at the entrance turnstile and the CM will scan the barcode and print out the Disney Park Ticket.

I have also added this ticket to the Disneyland California AP. The barcode scanned in and I named the ticket.

My Dining Reservations also show up on the AP.

UPDATE

Today I sorted out my ESTA , some new questions and sections since I last applied in 2016

I have now booked a ticket for the Paramount Studios Tour

I have checked out and planned my journey from Hollywood back to LAX, I will be getting FLYAWAY bus https://www.lawa.org/flyaway

As I dont drive and I use public transport in LA, I have been planning my routes and checking out bus timetables, using Google Maps. As I dont use my phone when Im in America, I do things the old fashioned way and print out maps and routes before I leave Ireland.
