wifi or data sim
« on: January 31, 2016, 03:07:33 PM »
The Disney World App looks like a great companion to navigate the parks, but ofcourse you need internet access for it. I was wondering how good the wifi is at the resort, both in the park and the hotels. Is it slow sometimes? Is it widely available throughout the resort or only at certain areas?

Or would you advise on getting a local data sim card and if so, any suggestions to which operator and where to get it?

The Disney World App is indeed a very good companion for your trip.

We have used only the wifi which is fairly good in most parks and certainly good enough if you just want to consult the wait times of the rides or which characters are out and about.

The wifi at the hotel is also good but I don't remember if your account works in any hotel on the property or just the one you're staying at.

The WIFI did work well when I was there in 2013. If I don't remember wrong, I only had to connect to the network, accept the terms, and off I go. The parks had one set of wifi, the hotels another one, but that wasn't any inconvenience.

Personally, I wouldn't even call that app a great companion, I'd call it a necessity. :D You can do a fair few things from the app, which saves you looking for Kiosks and such. My last visit was in May 2015, and honestly, I wouldn't leave the resort without a charged phone to have access to the app.

The park-wide WiFi at Disney World is probably your best bet, it's pretty speedy, not great, but plenty for the app itself (managing fast-passes, reservations, wait-times etc).
The resort WiFi is generally pretty good as well. Enough for some YouTube streaming and stuff like that.

Can it be slow sometimes, yes, though that will depend a lot on the crowd level of your location. As for availability, I believe that each resort has full coverage, as do all the parks. Reception can be spotty in some places in the park, but that's usually indoors under a lot of concrete. Overall it was pretty good in my experience.

Consider getting a 3 SIM which has free roaming in the USA.

I belive the OP is asking about Walt Disney World in Florida, wich has wifi in the parks.
Disneyland in Paris however, do not have wifi in the parks yet. But I belive that is schedule to come within a few years.

They're working on parkwide WiFi at DLP I believe, I expect them to try and get it finished for the 25th anniversary of the park in 2017. :) It's also necessary to have this to start implementing Magicbands at DLP.

thank you for clearing that up. so it means that to use the park app has to be used on data so i think i will skip that then as it is very expensive

It doesn't necessarily use that much data, but you'll be using it a fair bit. The park-wide WiFi is there for a reason, data tends to be quite expensive for foreign guests and WDW sees plenty of those. :)

Still looking for a sim card, especially for the days when we're outside of the resort (Universal Studios, the malls,...). Does anybody have experience with one of the prepaid AT&T or T-Mobile products: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/mobile-phone-accessories/sim-cards/pcmcat265100050014.c?id=pcmcat265100050014?

Just get a UK 3 SIM and buy an unlimited data plan for a month for £20. It's valid in the USA, France, and 16 other countries.

I'm with o2 and I didn't spend more than £5 using the app in park. Just turn every other push setting off!

As a follow up: in the end we didn't buy a SIM, although we saw some available in Best Buy vending machines on the airport. The wifi in the resorts and parks (and outside WDW in malls and fast food chains) was sufficient enough to supply our data needs.
