Spoiler: show
Each float has a driver located behind a gauze screen. Each flat has a minder carrying a red baton which is or can be illuminated. According to the position of the baton the driver knows when to stop or turn.

Each float has it's own motive power. Battery driven motors provide a silent propulsion.

It's a FujiFilm S1000fd.

Briefly it's 10MP, ISO 64-3200, with a 12X Digital/Optical Zoom, with various 'Scene Position Settings', Image Stabalisation and Manual Modes. My old camera was a FujiFilm A405, which I had for many years, so much so I got very familiar with the setup and icons that FujiFilm use. I wanted to stick with Fujifilm because of this very reason, but I wanted a more powerful and higher quality camera, though not a camera too complex at the same time. Saying that I hadn't banked on a 158 page instruction manual, no the wonder they put a basic manual in the box to read, then put the main one on a disc to print off..  >>

Thanks for the replies to my question. I love theatre and to me a Disney parade is like a huge performance so always wondered the process behind the performance. It's a huge challenge for any Director and cherographer.

Well just one day to go until the press event and the finished Version of Magic On Parade. As long as Tinkerbell is in her little cove at the back of the parade I will be happy as that is a lovely nice surprise that no one was expecting!

Looking at those pics, Tink definitely looks a whole lot better in that little cubby hole at the back than Donald does, he just looks squished! But I still stand by my, 'get that bear that hardly anyone knows of' off of that float.

I'll second that, thanks. It's like when I first saw how animated Jabba The Hutt - you kind of knew that must be the case, but only when you are shown do you then know for sure, and even then it was more than I expected. I'd love to see some behind the scenes of the parade workings.

Fantillusions you see this, Princess Parade/wonderful world - you saw every princess do this, Once upon a dream - this and you saw the glass castle of the last float being lowered into the float, not great but hey. There is limited space back there... they do the best they can and if you watch mickey is still mickey until you can't see him at all! ;-)

It's not new at all, you just need to be inclined to look...

(source: 5 years working in the parade department ;-) )

Wow, I didn't know that - and I'm really surprised that let it happen!

I don't know, it's just that Disney goes to such extremes to ensure that the "magic" and illusion of the parks isn't broken, it really surprises me that they'd do something like that in full view of the guests.

I know it's just a crane, but it just comes across as a little unprofessional. It would be like going to see a West End show and having them set up and do tech runs in front of the audience: it wouldn't spoil the show itself, but it would make it harder to "suspend disbelief" and lose yourself in the final product.

Yeah it's not great, I agree but there is little other option. :-(
If you google earth it, you see how much space the train takes up, never mind the other floats and operations...
I guess they could heighten the on stage door, but they are heavy enough as it is ;-)

Several reasons why:

2) DLP really want people spending money in shops at a time when people will be wanting a break from the park and keeping people in Main Street is the best way

3) If the parade is closer to Dreams then there will be a three way crowding at central plaza. (Those following the parade, those already there and those coming up from Fantasy land after the parade. This does not benefit Disney as a large crowd will gather and not spend money

Just thought I'd snip these two out, as strangely the exact opposite seems to happen at Magic Kingdom, they run Spectromagic up their Main Street and then start Wishes about half an hour afterwards, so it pushes people up Main Street, who then have nothing to do than fill the shops and work their way back down to the Hub to watch Wishes.

It's quite clever when you think of it, you're already at Main Street to watch the parade, you've been pushed far away from rides and know that the grand finalé fireworks are starting in 30 minutes, not nearly enough time to queue for and ride and then return from a ride, so you think "well I could browse all of these shops surrounding me while I wait", and you do, and you buy things!

Of course the easiest way around this would be to watch it from Frontierland and then walk on to Haunted Mansion, before making your way calmly to the hub to get a good spot for Wishes, but most guests won't think like that!

The thing about this parade, is that I honestly think that OUADP is the best Disney parade that I've ever seen. I liked the concept, the floats were brilliantly designed and were of a high quality and the song was by far my favourite. The smoke, the scents, the bubbles, Ursula - it was truly perfect, I thought.

While the changes to it haven't seen severe or extensive, it makes me sad that OUADP has essentially been watered down, with that average song and that first float, which looks more like a Barbie-advertisment with that Our-Castle-but-not-our-castle thing. Quality-wise, I also think it sticks out like a sore thumb amongst the others. Curiously, design-wise, it doesn't seem to fit the look and feel they've been pushing for the 20th and this seems strange to me for an opening float.

The last float is good - doesn't look bad at all IMO (But get Duffy off! I don't even see him as a Disney character.)

One thing i've been wondering.. what will they do when the 21st year roles around? The song specifically says 20 years, so will the just change the lyrics or what? I really hope Entertainment doesn't just run it anyway...

Well, I can imagine the 20th going on for two years. So even though it's the 21st they'll still be celebrating the 20th. After that who knows, maybe we'll get a new soundtrack for the parade.

I agree, I imagine they'll be running the parade as it is well into 2013. As for 2014? They might keep the parade the same but change the soundtrack, Disney World's Magic Kingdom did that with their 25th anniversary parade.

But who knows? By 2014 the parade will be seven years old, maybe they have something completely new in the pipeline.

This parade is not working well. Hear the music variations and mixing. The timing doesn't work, they can't fit the music with the speed of the floats and there are many synchronization problems. The park speakers try to play the parade music before the opening, and there was a strange fade.
